Coastal decks live a hard life — salt air, sun and the odd southerly. The timber you choose decides how the deck looks in ten years and how much work it is along the way.
Hardwood
Australian hardwoods like spotted gum are dense, durable and beautiful. They cost more up front but stand up to the coast and last decades with a periodic oil.
Treated pine
The most affordable option, treated pine suits budgets and painted finishes. It needs a little more maintenance near the sea.
Composite
Composite boards cost more but need almost no upkeep — a good fit if you’d rather not sand and oil every couple of years.
