Timber decking is the most common material used for decking, and for good reason! It looks fantastic, blending your home seamlessly with the nature around it. It also is a great insulator, keeping the heat away that concrete or other materials would otherwise absorb and heat up your home.
Timber, being a natural material, if harvested sustainably is fantastic for the environment, yet can last decades with minimal amount of care. With the odd re-coat needed every few years, timber decking is a low-maintenance solution for your deck!
Timber decking comes in all different varieties, but the main two categories are Pine (softwood) and Hardwoods:
Pine is an extremely common material, and for good reason. It’s reasonably quick to grow, meaning it’s more sustainable and cheaper! It’s incredibly easy to work with, being a softwood, however this means that it can be dented and scratched more easily, and will show wear and tear quicker than hardwoods. It may also require a bit more maintenance long-term to keep it water-proof and looking in good condition.
Hardwoods are where decks really come into their own. ‘Hardwood’ refers to the grain structure, in which slower growing trees have a tighter grain, which increases strength and durability. A well looked after hardwood deck can easily last decades.
There are many different varieties of hardwoods out there to choose from, each with their own look, feel and varying characteristics. Choosing the right wood depends on several factors, such as pest-resistance, rainfall, colour and look or whether you want to paint or oil your deck. Before deciding on a timber, consult with your trusted tradie to help make the best decision on your circumstances.
There is an alternative to timber: composite decking. Composite is a mixture of often recycled materials that are extremely durable. They do not suffer the same aging as wood, and can be styled to be any colour and look you desire. Because of this they are practically maintenance-free, only requiring a clean when you want to.
They also come with clip-down design, meaning almost seamless joints with no visible fixing or screws to ruin your look.
While these can be a great choice, they can be more expensive than timber, and might require some shopping around to find the right material, quality and look you need. They also can never match the natural look of a timber deck.
Whatever material you choose for your next deck or re-decking, make sure you consult with a trained professional who knows what decisions you need to make to get the best out of your deck. With quality craftsmanship, Trademark Construction is there through every step right through to you taking your first steps on your brand new deck.
